Orphanage number 4 was constructed in the 1950's and is home to around 120 orphaned children. There are two major buildings, one for sleeping; the other contains classrooms and administration. In addition there are two small classrooms built independently to house practical subjects such as woodwork for the boys and sewing for the girls. It is the largest Institute in Odessa for orphans.

Each ‘dorm' in the sleeping building houses between 5 or 6 children. Like all institutions mattresses are mostly soiled and in urgent need of replacement. New bed linen is also a priority, as well as towels. Unfortunately there is just not enough money in the budget to pay for items such as these.

The director at Orphanage number 4 has been particularly successful in attracting additional funding from various charitable and external sources. The facilities at this institution are generally in a better condition than those found elsewhere but still require further substantial investment.

The children at this orphanage are ‘officially' classified by the local authorities as orphans. They all have state paperwork which will allow them obtain employment or go on to further education when they leave the orphanage. The orphanage receives slightly more per student as they qualify for full state funding.

Money is often required for supplies of soap, girls' hygienic materials, toothpaste and shampoo. The current budget is just not sufficient to cater for demand.

This is a view of the external play area for the children. Orphanage number 4 is better equipped than most, there is lots of space for the children to play in the orphanage grounds. The orphanage has an active and successful football team who proudly wear the colours of Chelsea Football Club, a donation from a supporter in the United Kingdom !
These classrooms house equipment for practical subjects. Woodwork for the boys and sewing for the girls. The buildings are unfortunately not in the best condition and the equipment is life expired and substantially unusable.
This is the main kitchen at orphanage number 4. In common with the other institutions everything needs to be replaced.
