Boarding school “Limanskoe” is an institution located 80 km from Odessa . It houses 115 mentally challenged children aged 6-18. The premises of this institution are big and well-kept. There are two main sleeping blocks which belong to the school. One is used for younger kids, the other for older children. Very close by, there is a cafeteria which is where the kids can wash hands and eat. Then, there is also a school. When walking about the sleeping blocks, we were impressed by the amount of work that has been carried out there. We were further impressed that each sleeping block had its own toilets and showers. The toilet facilities were clean and well maintained and a credit to the institution staff. All sleeping rooms are organized by gender and by grade. The sleeping block for the younger children is a newer building, also equipped with proper toilets, showers and playing rooms. Most importantly, the halls of this boarding school actually feel like a home where the staff clearly take good care of the children. At a first glance, it is not evident that all children are mentally challenged. They are all fully aware, educated, and have great manners. They are well cared for and treated accordingly. It is evident that funds have recently been invested into this institution. However, orphanages and boarding schools can never have too much invested in them. For example boarding school “Limanskoe” could use a few new windows, repaired ceilings, new beds, doors and an installed playground. Despite land surrounding the institution, there is not very much for children to do. There is no playground on the premises.
